Helping a community of some 30 families get better access to food and ongoing access to clean drinking water is both rewarding and humbling, but in these days of continued drought, insecurity and raids from neighbouring tribes, lack of any work or income and a plague of locusts it barely skims the surface of answering their needs. Add to that the current covid pandemic, almost non-existent government support and very rare opportunities for children to advance through education to make a better life, and one can see something far more long-term, sustainable and fundamental is needed.

The locust plague indirectly sparked the conversation about insect-protein, not only to feed the families in the community but also as a potential business-income source and 'crop' for use in other applications, such as ground meal for human consumption and feeds for livestock. From here, investigation led us to Flying Foods and more can be read of their whole approach at their website.

A partnership with Flying Foods provides full 'start-up', taking new trainee farmers to production and harvest/sale typically within a 90 period. The full 'package' includes:

  • Full training (both pre-evaluation and subsequent hands on training)

  • Rearing crates and equipment

  • Growing material/peat

  • Grub stock

  • Cricket feed

  • Marketing and Sales support

For the pre-evaluation training, it's envisioned that upto 25 potential farmers would undergo a 5 day course in Maralal town, so further funds will cover transport (to and from course) accommodation and food during the course.

As of late November 2020 the full cost estimates came back somewhat more than originally anticipated, and this has caused us to pause and re-think. Via Phoebe Owuor at Flying Food however, there is now a search to attract a larger corporate sponsor-patron, and further news of this will be posted here (or contact us if you would like to collaborate).
